The function of the Scientific Council is to advise on current developments and future trends with respect to environmental protection and sustainable development law and policy in Europe and in the world, and on the activities the association may undertake in response to them; review the overall scientific quality of the work performed by the association; review drafts of specific publications upon request; assist the association to achieve greater visibility so that it can implement its programme effectively; and recommend the appointment of Fellows.

•  Riccardo Petrella, Professor of political economy, Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) (Italy)

•  Nicolas de Sadeleer, Professor of environmental law, Facultés Universitaires Saint-Louis ( FUSL) (Belgium)

•  Maria Eduarda Gonçalves, Associate Professor and head of the law department, Higher Institute for Labour and Business Sciences (ISTCE), Lisbon (Portugal)

•  Luc Lavrysen, Judge in the Belgian Constitutional Court (Cour d'Arbitrage) and professor of environmental law at Ghent University (Belgium)

•  Joyeeta Gupta, Professor in Climate Change Policy and Law, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and Professor in Water Policy and Law, UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Delft (Netherlands)

•  Mohamed Ali Mekouar, Head of the Legal Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) (Italy)
